Courtyard Room

Couven’s Fireplace

The rooms of the Couven Museum are furnished with pieces ranging from the Rococo period through the Napoleonic Empire style to the Biedermeier era. The Courtyard Room is largely designed in the Rococo style. One example is the fireplace with its lively ornamentation, designed by Johann Joseph Couven (1701–1763), the most important Aachen architect of this period and the museum’s namesake. The carved fireplace panel features the period motif of the “rocaille” (French for shellwork) in imaginative variations. The shell itself appears at the upper edge of the mirror frame. Couven received commissions from the city and the church, as well as from the nobility and the bourgeoisie.
