Pharmacy

The reconstruction of the original “Adler Pharmacy”

From 1662 on, the “Adler Pharmacy” was run by four generations of the Coebergh family. In
1783, Andreas Monheim took over the business. In 1786, he commissioned Jakob Couven –
son of the famous Rococo architect Johann Joseph Couven – with a representative renovation
of the residential and commercial building, which would remain in the Monheims’ possession
until 1939. Not only medicines but also spices, wine, beeswax and chocolate were sold in their
pharmacy. The pharmacist’s main tools were the mortar and the scales on the sales counter.
Prepared remedies and raw medicinal substances were kept in magnificently painted
receptacles.
