Biedermeier
Retreat into the Private Sphere
During the Biedermeier period (1815–1848), a lifestyle developed that placed the cozy, comfortable home at the center of life. Since the Napoleonic Wars, simplicity and practicality had shaped interior design, as financial resources and raw materials for elaborate decoration were lacking. The living room, with its sofa, table, and chairs, became the ideal retreat for family gatherings. This retreat into private life was already mocked by freethinkers of the time. As a result, “Biedermeier” also became a pejorative term for the apolitical, petit-bourgeois way of life shaped by strict morality and domestic comfort.
