The Courtyard Room is largely designed in the Rococo style. One example is the fireplace with its lively ornamentation, designed by Johann Joseph Couven (1701\u20131763), the most important Aachen architect of this period and the museum\u2019s namesake. The carved fireplace panel features the period motif of the \u201crocaille\u201d (French for shellwork) in imaginative variations. The shell itself appears at the upper edge of the mirror frame.
